Background

A lifetime is specified for each development of safety components, which is usually within an interval of 8 to 12 years for electronic components. This lifetime is used to calculate the failure probability of the component and therefore to calculate the PFD or PFH value as well as the associated SIL certification. Here, it is possible to work with or without a test interval. At the time JUMO decided to base the entire calculation on a runtime of 10 years without a test interval. As a result the customer has no maintenance costs for 10 years. This time has now expired in your application, which means that the basis of the SIL/PL certification for the product has effectively expired.

Here you have regular fee-based maintenance intervals, which are not necessary with the STB/STW. At around 100 000 km, the timing belt needs to be replaced as a precaution. Similarly, after 10 years the STB/STW needs to be replaced. By comparison, the replacement of the STB/STW would now be required. After replacing the timing belt or the STB/STW, you have a new situation again. In the case of the STB/STW, the new situation involves the SIL/PL certificate.
